Inmate Programs
Life Skills
The first month begins with Basic Skills classes, like anger management and communications. The program then moves up to basic and advanced job skills training. The classes are open to medium or lower ranked inmates, male and female (separate classes).
Inmates who graduate from this program are demonstrating a remarkably low "return rate".
Jail Tours
This program works primarily with juveniles participating in the teen court program It gives them a chance to get a first hand look at the consequences of illegal behavior. Tours are also provided to local schools and community organizations. This year 316 individuals have toured this facility representing 22 different organizations.
Volunteer Program and Chaplain Services
The Volunteer Program is coordinated by the Chaplain. We have volunteers from Narcotics Anonymous and Alcoholics Anonymous, community social services programs as well as various religious organizations.
Adult Education Program
Through a collaborated effort with Alachua County School Board's Loften High School, this program enables general population and juvenile inmates to improve reading, mathematics, and language skills. All new students are tested, using the TABE (Test of Adult Basic Education). GED preparation is provided for students who test at or above the ninth grade level. Inmates who do not have a high school diploma and inmates with a diploma who test below a ninth grade level in one or more of the three subject areas (reading, writing, and mathematics) are eligible to attend class.
Alachua County Library District - Jail Services
The Library in the Alachua County Sheriff's Office Department of the Jail is an actual branch of the County Library System. The circulation has been very high, with over a hundred thousand checkouts for this year.
